View Full Version : BerryCade - Raspberry Pi based frontend for MAME (MAME4ALL and AdvanceMAME)

This is a ready to go Raspberry Pi image(use Win32DiskImager to write it to a MicroSD card). Just get your roms, copy them over and it should work perfectly. All the preview videos and artwork is on the image.
This is setup for the Raspberry Pi 2, if you have an older Pi read the info doc on what you need to disable to get it to boot/run.
You'll need MAME romset 0.37b5 for MAME4ALL and 0.106 for AdvanceMAME. No roms included in this build(apart from 4 or 5 freeware ones for testing).
Also, you'll need a 32GB or larger MicroSD card(class 10 or better if you want a smooth interface and fast boot). The preview vids, images and whatnot take up about 10GB on their own. Which just leaves enough room to copy over both romsets(less the massive CHD's that are in 0.106).

Size: 25.8GB rar file.

BerryCade v1.1 Update
-Modified advmame.rc to use scanlines(scan2horz)for all games(can be disabled directly in AdvanceMAME "Tab" menu if you don’t like them or are using this on a real CRT arcade monitor).
-Set Vsync in advmame.rc to "no" as the default "yes" was causing screen tearing issues.
-Enabled cheat.dat
-Minor performance tweaks to advmenu.rc
How to update:
1. SFTP to your Raspberry Pi.
2. Copy the 2 .rc files contained in the v1.1 update zip file to "/home/pi/.advance" (if asked to overwrite, say yes).
3. Reboot

V1.2 coming in next week or so(I hope).
Added Megadrive/Genesis and Super Nintendo/Super Famicom menu.
Preview videos are not working well on these for some reason(yet) so it may just be preview artwork in the menu.
Hello. Congratulations on your system, if you can help me thank you, I downloaded the file and formatted the berrycade SDFormatter MicroSD card sandisk class 10 with the software the option to adjust the size of the partition left marked yes and formatted program and created a partition 28.7gb more when sends record the image berrycade by win32disk he says q is not enough space .... gotta use another card brand? or 64gb card would only record? GratefulQUOTE=RetromanIE;65531]V1.2 coming in next week or so(I hope).

Not really sure what exactly you are mean? But you just need a 32GB card and win32diskimager and you should be able to load the image. You don't need to pre-format the card at all.
Hello, I tried to write the system in 2 card brands 32gb class 10, samsung and sandisk in both the software win32disk says there are no available space, the card partition has 28.7 GB more says he has no space could check?

Hello friends!
I had the same problem. The 32 gb card I have does not have the necessary space to handle with this image.
Probably we'll have to buy a 64 gb card to test this image

Thank you so much for BerryCade. I bought my Raspberry Pi just to hook up to a Sony Trinitron tube TV with an arcade stick to play arcade games and this is an excellent frontend for it. I was having a hard time getting the RetroPie setup working with MAME4All before, but this is working way better and it's just what I need.
I only have one problem at this point - the volume. It's super quiet for some reason so I have to turn the TV volume way up, which produces a pretty loud hiss. I have the volume setting at 0db in BerryCade since there's no option to increase higher than that. I tried modifying the mame.cfg with a higher positive decibel rating, but that seemed to have no effect. Is there another way to fix this problem?

Do you know if this software image will work on the Pi 3?

Yes it runs fine on the Pi3, the interface is quicker to load and move around due to the extra power of the Pi 3.
I'm also working on an update to this image at the moment that will add more emulators and shrink the image down a bit to allow it on a 16GB card. I might also include the option to turn on some fancy filters for the emulators.
But its slow going at the moment due to other things I'm working on. I'll post an update here as soon as its ready.

I like the look of the video running mame it's just what i'm after, nice work. I have retropie already but I want to just run mame and I much prefer the look of your menus.
I have a slow connection so was wondering if it's possible to split the google drive file into small chunks or can you suggest a good download tool that resume when it times out? I am just trying to download at the moment for the third time :(

I will see about providing a split file to download and post the link here.

If you could that would be great, possibly 1gb parts?
Thanks

I bought a 64gb micro sdcard to install Berrycade. It worked like a charm in my Raspberry Pi 2. Thanks RetromanIE

I have tried the image BerryCade_v1.0_24thFeb2015_no-roms.img in Raspberry Pi 3 whith 32 GB and 128 GB microSD cards and it doesn't work. Only apears a image whith a colours palette like this:
391
I have tried deleting the below section in the file as this relates to RPi 2 only. But it doesn't work.
---------------------
arm_freq=1000
sdram_freq=500
core_freq=500
over_voltage=2
temp_limit=80 #Will throttle to default clock speed if hit.
gpu_mem=320
---------------------
What is the problem?
Thanks

I had a friend download the disc image for me so now I don't need the multi part files.
I have tried to write the image to my 32gb microSD but it didn't fit?
So I am now getting a 64gb microSD to give that a try.

Bummer, doesn't seem to work for me either, I get the same issue as post #19.
Any ideas RetromanIE ?
Was there any tweaking that you did to get it working on a Pi 3?

Update..
I have been looking into this problem and after a bit of research I managed to get it going.
After trying a lot of different things, I ended up just copying the kernel7.img & start.elf files from my retropie SD onto the Berrycade SD and it worked.
Now I just need to copy some ROMS on to see how it works. There are 2 roms already loaded but they don't seem to work?
Do you have any instructions on how to use BerryCade for setting up the FTP and how to change the menus etc like on your vid.?
I do have an FTP client that I used for Retropie but it isn't connecting for BerryCade. Maybe the IP address is different, but I thought that would be more at a hardware level and would be the same?
update ..
I found some instructions in the download area, I'll look at those and see how I go.
update ..
I have worked out that the wifi/wlan0 is not running/configured that is why I can't find the IP address. When I run ifconfig it only shows me eth0 & lo, not wlan0.
I'm only new to the pi, how do I start/config the wifi/wlan0?
For those having issues running on the PI3 try either exiting Berrycade or SSH in and run a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Worked for me.
You will need to use a PI2 or PI shouldn't matter as long as it boots.

Yeah will be handy, but i'm having issues getting the wifi part working so I can't connect to the internet and get the updates at the moment :(
Thanks for the tip

I’m still working on an update for this. But as can happen, other things are keeping me very busy at the moment.
I hope to have the update finished and uploaded within the next 2 weeks or so. If not, then another 2 weeks :)

I'm still working on it. A few users have access to a rough early version and are testing.
I just don't have the time to get it fully finished at the moment.
Hi there!
I managed to set up a BerryCade on a raspi3. What are the first steps after I successfully can boot with the BerryCade SD card? Do I need to run some script to do some init stuff or do I just place the roms to the correct location? There are multiple directories names "roms" which one is the right one for me to put my roms in? Is there some documentation anywhere?

I haven’t had time lately to update BerryCade so at the moment it is as it is. I know it works for me on the Pi 3, and others have made a few changes to the install to get it working for them. If you have a read through the thread there are some tips on getting it working there.
I do have a work in progress of the new version that works fully with the Pi 3, but it isn’t ready for the public yet as its quite messy.
There are lots of emulation and MAME frontend out there for the Pi 3 so maybe try some of those if you don’t want to edit the default BerryCade install.
I’ll post an update once I eventually get this working and cleaned up.
